NETWORK
A Network is a group of two or more computer systems linked together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware and computer software.
Types of Networks
The three main types of Network area is as follows
Ø LAN
Ø WAN
Ø MAN
LAN-Local Area Network
A LAN connects network devices over a relatively short distance. A networked office building, school, or home usually contains a single LAN. In TCP/IP networking, a LAN is often but not always implemented as a single IP subnet. In addition to operating in a limited space, LANs are also typically owned, controlled, and managed by a single person or organization. They also tend to use certain connectivity technologies, primarily Ethernet and Token Ring. Local Area Networks are viable to quick change, using a bus network topology that allows for easy access too.

WAN-Wide Area Network
Wide Area Networks, are used across the globe, many networks connect with one another across continents to create one giant Wide Area Network.. A WAN is a dispersed collection of LANs. A Router is a network device which connects LANs to WAN. In IP networking, the router maintains both a LAN address and a WAN address. Most WANs are not owned by any one organization but rather exist under collective or distributed ownership and management. The largest example of a Wide Area Network is the internet itself, which connects all users to the information and data that is available on the the internet. For example technologies like ATM,Frame Relay etc for connectivity over long distance.

MAN-Metropolitan Area Network
Metropolitan Area Networks are used to create communication between systems in an entire city. Hence a Metropolitan Area Network area falls between the sizes Local Area Networks, and Wide Area Networks.

Other Types of Networks
WLAN-Wireless Local Area Networks
WLAN allow for small amounts of mobility whilst being connected to the internet. In WLAN,they do not require network cables to connect each other. Wireless Area Networks are commonly seen being used by a WiFi internet connection.

SAN -System Area Network
SAN provides high speed internet connections to a cluster of computers. These are speed oriented networks. These are mainly used for server purposes.

SAN-Storage Area Network
These are used as information databases. They are specifically used for the storage of information, and easy retrieval of specific pieces of data whenever required. Storage Area Networks are usually used by websites which offer downloading services.

CAN-Campus Area Networks
Campus Area Networks allow for easy file sharing between different departments as all the files are usually shared on the server machines of each LAN network. This type of network offers a lot of simplicity in the transfer and downloading of files. These are usually a connection of many small LAN networks which are often used on university campuses and office buildings.
